The ongoing trend to develop and produce an increasing number of product variants is a major complexity and cost driver. The system environments typically in place today are not provide comprehensive support of modular platform and product strategies. Project owners are frequently confronted with questions such as:

- How to balance between variants, variant needs & cost?
- How to define modules & specify interfaces within a PLM environment?
- How to trace & track dependencies across product ranges?
- How to handle change management on an vehicle and product range level?
- How to ensure product quality during the desing phase?

Modular product architectures, carry over parts and production efficiency improvements provide substantial potentials for cost savings. However, due to inherent limitations in today's legacy environments, many of these initiatives fall short of their expecations. Typical questions are:

- How can we be more efficient in evaluating multiple design alternatives?
- Can we conduct trade-offs upfront, to avoid huge commercial implications?
- Can we be more efficient in maintaining multiple working environments?
- How to calculate “should cost”?
- How to design to value?

The globalization of markets requires a globalization of product development and sourcing. In conjunction with the ongoing trend to outsource critical development tasks to partners in the value chain, this phenomenon is expected to further complicate collaboration and communication between stakeholders in product development. Typical challenges are:

- How to ensure that information flows smoothly between affected stakeholders?
- How to ensure that changes are shared effectively with affected stakeholders?
- How to ensure protect valuable proprietary information?
- How to provide & update a work environment that is accessible for all stakeholders?
- How to synchronize & track progress with affected stakeholders?

It is a common practice today to rely on different authoring tools for different subsections of a vehicle. This creates major challenges for the verfication and analysis on an overall vehicle level. By efficiently integrating all systems in place today into an overarching PLM environment, substantial improvements can be obtaind in the following areas:

- How to share & synchronize design data across disciplines (frontloading)
- How to harmonize CAD & BOM in a variable vehicle architecture?
- How to generate a DMU on demand?
- How to verify maturity level across disciplines & multi CAD environment?

The integration of interdisciplinary information into an agile product development process which is characterized by multiple product variants is a core challenge for the configuration of functional modules that consist of hard- and software. Solutions tpyically employed today are either home grown or open source. Both have severe limits with regards to their usability in a digital representation of the complete vehicle. Typical questions are:

- Did we use the correct firmware version on that vehicle?
- How to configure hardware, electronics & software?
- How to synchronize hardware and software changes ?
- How to satisfy the needs of the automotive software design standard AUTOSAR?

A growing number of environmental regulations is a major complexity driver in product development and production. Manual processes or homegrown tools in place today are not capable of integrating into overal processes on a vehicle and program level. Typical questions are:

- How to track multiple regulations of different countries on different products?
- How to design for compliance from the early phase of development?
- How to find secure alternatives for SVHCs?
- How to synchronize and automate supplier information?
- How to balance product performance along multiple dimensions?
